How we turned a no play area into an all weather play surface

How we turned a no play area into an all weather play surface

Hannah Jones · September 06, 2017

What do you do with a play area you can’t play in?

This was the issue facing one of our clients recently. They had young children and a fair sized back garden, so they created a bespoke play area for the children.

The surface they ended up with was of a poor quality and not installed properly. Although the play surface looked ok, the issues appeared when the children played on it. The result was their clothes and hands were left with mucky stains everywhere. Although the surface looked acceptable – it was the wrong surface.

wrong surface installed on play area

Tired of washing children and clothes the client eventually turned to us for help.

How we manufactured a solution to the problem

With all projects, we look at what the client wants and how this can fit into their outdoor space.
  • How often is the space used?
  • Will the design match the rest of the garden?
  • Weather conditions for the area.
As with all projects, we have to consider the budget available. This has to be right for the customer and the play area.

Making the project right, rather than starting again

The most cost-effective way to make this project right was to use our wetpour play surface. Our play area uses resin to bind the rubber chippings together. Thus creating a soft, colourful, safe and certified solution to the problem. We overlaid the existing surface to a depth of 15mm.

A practical and pleasant finish

Our weather proof play area does not hold moisture so puddling is also not an issue. The recycled rubber also dries fast, so play time is much longer! Our rubber is inert and non-toxic and will not stain clothes!

How we do it

We control the entire process of making our recycled rubber products from end to end. We collect used vehicle tyres, process them into chippings, and polyurethane colour them. All our certified products are tested for use on children’s play areas. Our rubber chippings are ideal for equestrian arenas and even chicken runs. Our recycled rubber chippings can also be found in theatres and catwalks too!

A happy family

The end result is clear to see; we have happy children who can play to their heart’s content (in any weather too!) We also have happy parents who have a solution to their garden play area problem. the area is safe, long lasting, and affordable.
